Michael Fassbender Talks X-Men: Dark Phoenix's Genosha

Genosha has been a famous fictional location in the X-Men comics, but it is only making its first appearance in June's X-men:Dark Phoenix. The society in the film is said to be run by Magneto, and Michael Fassbender talks a bit about this movie version of the mutant sanctuary.

Talking during the Ace Comic Con in Phoenix (via ComicBook), Fassbender explains:

"What [Magneto's] done in Genosha is kind of cool because he's sort of stepped out of the conflict, if you will, and said, ‘Okay, you know, just give us this place that's our own and just leave us be and we'll be self-sufficient and anybody who's willing to sort of not bring violence to the area and sort of pitch in and do their part, then they have a home there and they're welcome there.'"

Seeing that Magneto has always been in the center of the conflict with the films, it looks like he's finally found ‘peace' again by building his mutant sanctuary. The problem comes when a young Jean Grey has become possessed with the Phoenix Force, and Magneto has to leave his safe haven.

Fassbender continues:

"… And I think, you know, it's a pretty cool philosophy. And there's only something that happens outside of Genosha that sort of drags him away from this place that he's set up. But it was cool when [director] Simon Kinberg was developing Genosha and we were walking around it and it's like, it's sort of off-the-grid, self-sustained community. It's pretty beautiful. But then of course, then you see the other side of him once he makes the decision to do something, it's go big or go home."

With the Disney/Fox merger set to finalize early this year, a lot of people are expecting Dark Phoenix to be the end of the X-franchise that was started back in 2000. Personally, I think it's about time. The timeline is already all messed up, and I think these 10-year time jumps were a bad decision. Am I supposed to believe Michael Fassbender is in his 60s in this film? Ridiculous.

Catch X-Men: Dark Phoenix when it comes out June 7.
