Sony Pictures has released an official short film, The Spider Within, which aims to raise mental health awareness and funds for the Kevin Love Foundation.
A new animated short film starring Miles Morales has been uploaded to Sony Pictures’ YouTube channel. The Spider Within is an official entry to the Spider-Verse produced with the Kevin Love Fund for mental health.
The Kevin Love Fund provides young individuals with the tools and support they need to cope with mental health challenges in everyday life. The Fund utilizes donors’ contributions to make this support environment free to its beneficiaries.
The short film shows Miles Morales silently suffering from anxiety and stress both from school and from living an alter-ego as Spider-Man. Although his father tries to offer companionship and support, Miles shrugs him off and prefers space and solitude, but this has detrimental effects.
The most notable part of the short film is the dream sequence involving a huge spider that explodes into thousands of normal-sized crawlies that first envelop and then overwhelm a screaming Miles.
Viewers on YouTube has praised this segment, saying that the strobe-like eyes of the giant spider immobilizing the protagonist encapsulates exactly how dream paralysis feels.
The film also earned approval for its ending where Miles finally approaches his father and accepts his support after the horrifying dream. The pair walk out to get some fresh air, and Miles starts to open up about what goes on in his mind.
The film ends on that hopeful note. The dialogue, the music, and the picture gradually fade to black as father and son walks farther away from the camera.
