Royal pundit Lady Colin Campbell talked answered several questions from royal fans on her YouTube channel. In a Q&A, one follower asked Princess Diana's biographer if there was an event that led Prince Charles to give his daughter-in-law the nickname "Tungsten."

"Well, I was actually told when I was writing the book that it wasn't just one event," Campbell said, who wrote the 2020 book Meghan and Harry: The Real Story. "It was the feeling that she was so brutal and harsh underneath the charm. She was very charming, initially. "But it was the smile of a barracuda [and] the toughness of tungsten."

The Diana in Private scribe added that it takes more than one event to read a character. She also speculated that the Prince of Wales may have received feedback from other royals, including his wife, Duchess Camilla, eldest son Prince William, and daughter-in-law Kate Middleton.

The Sussexes are reportedly at odds with the royal family. An unnamed source recently told Page Six that his memoir will contain new information that would make the royals, except for Queen Elizabeth, nervous.

Prince Charles' unique nickname for Meghan Markle, inspired by a metal known to be tough, was first reported in 2018. According to a report from Daily Mail, the heir apparent fondly called Prince Harry's wife "Tungsten" because she was "tough and unbending," and her father-in-law admired those qualities.

"Prince Charles admires Meghan for her strength and the backbone she gives Harry, who needs a tungsten-type figure in his life as he can be a bit of a softy. It's become a term of endearment," an unnamed source told the outlet.

Prince Harry's father and wife had a close bond, and it was apparent when the Prince of Wales offered to walk the former Suits star down the aisle after her father canceled her attendance at the royal wedding.

Markle's father, Thomas Markle Sr., approved of Prince Charles taking over his place in giving away his daughter during her big day. For the Markle patriarch, he couldn't "think of a better replacement" than the future king.

"He looked very handsome and my daughter looked beautiful with him. I was jealous I wish I'd been there I wish it had been me but thank god he was there and thank him for that. It might have been a treat for him as he never had a daughter," he added.
