Meghan Markle is among those who felt the changes in Netflix's programming after the streaming giant decided to cancel some shows to cut costs and grow its revenue. To make the matter worse, the Duchess of Sussex has been subjected to various criticisms following the setback with Netflix.
Meghan Markle Woke Bubble Burst Following Netflix's Move
The Duchess of Sussex was working on an animated series about a 12-year-old girl on her way to self-discovery title Pearl. However, Netflix axed the series to cut costs.
Matthew Lynn said Netflix's move left Markle humiliated because it burst her "woke bubble," The Sun reported.
"Dire-sounding Pearl was a perfect example" of how the streaming giant
has "been captured by a brand of preachy, politically correct, woke programming that is at risk of driving away audiences," Lynn wrote for The Telegraph.
He noted that Netflix's decision to drop Pearl demonstrated that streaming companies "are starting to work out that sanctimonious woke programming doesn’t pull in the viewers."
"Dull, worthy, preachy, and sermonising (what were the chances that the inspiring female leaders featured would include an animated Mrs Thatcher discussing the importance of controlling inflation, or indeed a CGI Queen Elizabeth I on the making of the modern world in Tudor England? I am just taking a wild guess here, but possibly not very high), it embodied the worst of Woke-flix," he continued.
Lynn believed that the entertainment industry would switch back to its original programming that should be about the entertainment industry.
"Its values should be neither right or left of centre, and with a few obvious boundaries such as preventing racism or sexism, it shouldn’t promote any political agenda," he added.
Following the cancelation, the outlet noted that Markle's royal tie was not a guarantee to secure projects.
Meghan Markle Humiliated After Netflix Canceled Pearl
Several netizens mocked Meghan Markle after she lost her cartoon animated series. Most of them are her critics, including Piers Morgan.
"I was obviously distraught to learn that the woman who cancelled me has now herself been cancelled," Morgan said on his show Uncensored.
Many also said that they were relieved Netflix canceled Pearl otherwise, they would cancel their subscription.
"Am less likely to cancel my Netflix subscription now @netflix has canceled that incredibly dreary-sounding Meghan Markle thing, tbh," one tweeted.
"If the show 'Pearl' had gone through on Netflix, we would have canceled our subscription. If Harry & Meghan put anything disparaging against the Monarchy or the Royal family I will cancel @netflix," one commented.
"Will subscribe to Netflix again now that the streaming giant has canceled development on #Pearl - an animated series created by Meghan Markle. Can’t stand that hypocrite! #netflixseries #MeghanMarkleisaLiar," another added.
Meanwhile, some Sussex fans were very sad because they were looking forward to Pearl. Many also pointed out that Pearl wasn't the only animated that Netflix axed to cut cost, so they should not single out the duchess' project.
"Oh no Pearl is dumped by Netflix! That's so dreadful - I was really looking forward to it and was planning to subscribe especially! Very disappointed and very disrespectful to Meghan and all the hard work she has put into it," Markle fan tweeted.
"Have you seen it? You already know that Netflix cancelled all their upcoming animated programs but yet you single out Pearl. Your unwarranted hatred is on full display for the world to see. You must be absolute s--te," another supporter added.
