Matt Ryan played the role of John Constantine in his own series at NBC, as well as in Arrowverse shows like the Legends of Tomorrow and Crisis on Infinite Earths. The actor also voiced Constantine in various animated shorts and some animated films, but it seems like Ryan wants to add another project on that list.

Speaking to Den of Geek, Ryan expressed his desire to star in a new Justice League Dark TV show that's being developed for HBO by J.J. Abrams. "I'm a theater actor, you know? That's where I spent most of my life," he said. "I always say to them, ‘Just get me in the room.' And then if they don't want me for the role that's their choice."

While he would respect the studio's decision if he weren't to be chosen for the role, Ryan admits he would "be very disappointed" if the project went ahead "without even sitting down and seeing" what he could do with the material.

That said, Ryan has basically made this character his own and it would be totally epic for him to play Constantine for the HBO show. The actor seems to be open in bringing a potential new iteration of the character as well. "Even though the material is different and I know that I'm gonna have to adhere to the material in my head," he said. "I have to stay in that world of John Constantine and all of those comics that I love."

While he'd have to "dance to these different tunes," Ryan points out that whatever happens, he thinks Constantine is a "great character." Making it clear that he has "no rights" or "ownership" over the character, there's a part of him that "wants to dive into a part of John" that he'd like to explore, and hopes that the opportunity comes someday.

Abrams' Justice League Dark TV show will follow the group's adventures as they face supernatural threats, with some being too much for them to handle. In the comics, Constantine serves as the leader, along with members Zatanna, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Black Orchid, Phantom Stranger, and Madame Xanadu.
