Matt Reeves' The Batman Will Reportedly Set Up Batgirl and Nightwing Movies

Does anyone remember the highly-anticipated Nightwing movie? Okay, maybe highly-anticipated is a bit much but there were a lot of people who were pumped for it. We haven't seen much news about the film since it was announced back in 2017 but we now have a reason why; The Batman. As expected, DC and Warner Bros are planning for the movie to be a launching point for more films, including Batgirl and the aforementioned Nightwing.

According to a report from Forbes, there are plans for both of these characters to be set up in this version of Gotham from Matt Reeves. This means that plans for Nightwing are currently delayed since the report claims that Dick Grayson might be introduced in Reeves' The Batman trilogy. Only time will tell but giving Grayson an origin through these movies would be pretty cool.

Likewise, it's expected that the upcoming Batgirl film project will be tied into this new bat-world, and the currently delayed Nightwing movie has to wait until the status of Batman's sidekick has been settled. From what I've heard, Dick Grayson is expected to make an appearance in one of the Reeves movies, probably in the form of an origin story (whether that's the film's main plot or a subplot, however, remains to be seen).

While it's a bit of a shame that the Nightwing movie's plans are tied to The Batman, this does make a ton of sense. Dick Grayson's story is heavily tied to Bruce Wayne's and it would be odd to just jump into his solo superhero career in media res. Plus, Titans is already doing that so that would feel a bit redundant.

The Batman is scheduled for a June 25, 2021 release.
