Mary Elizabeth Winstead On Getting Cast As Birds Of Prey’s Huntress

Yesterday, word came out that Warner Brothers had just cast Scott Pilgrim vs. The World star Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the new Huntress in the DC Extended Universe's Birds of Prey.

Now, speaking in an interview with The Wrap to campaign for her upcoming movie, All About Nina, Winstead has decided to open up about her getting cast as the DC villain Huntress. Though the star admits that she isn't really a big reader of comic books, Winstead claims that she found so much interest in the character after meeting with Cathy Yan, the director of the upcoming all-female superhero DC movie.

"I can't say that I was a huge comic book reader," the actress admitted during her discussion with the publication. "But when I met with Cathy Yan, who's directing the film, and learned kind of the back story of the character, I was really interested. It's a really strong, kind of emotional place to start from for a superhero character. I won't go into too much detail now, but I think it's interesting and an opportunity to do something cool with this kind of character."

Wintead also expressed her faith in Yan as well as Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson (who also wrote for the Transformer's Bumblebee movie), saying that she trusted their ability to write and direct her character and her character's origin story.

For those who aren't familiar with Huntress, the character Helena Bertinelli is introduced as the daughter of one of Gotham City's biggest mobsters. However, Helena finds her parents killed during her teenage years, and after training to develop and refine her fighting abilities, Helena becomes the vigilante Huntress.

Birds of Prey is set to release on February 07, 2020.
