Mary Elizabeth Winstead and More Actresses Being Eyed for DCEU's Birds of Prey

The DCEU may have gone on hiatus after Justice League, but it looks like the franchise is getting back on its feet with more upcoming films. Joker is currently in production, but we have an update on the all-woman team-up Birds of Prey.

According to the Wrap, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is being eyed by the studio to play The Huntress, while Jurnee Smollet-Bell is being considered for the role of Black Canary. Other actresses being considered for Huntress are Cristin Milioti, Sofia Boutella, and Margaret Qualley; another Black Canary contender is Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

The roster also promises to bring to screen Det. Renee Montoya, and Justina Machado and Roberta Colindrez said to be considered for the part.

So far, no offers have been made to any of the actresses, but the studio is aiming to finalize the cast list by September in order to get everyone prepared for training and fight choreography. Production for the movie is set to start in January.

For now, the only cast member that's official is Margot Robbie who is reprising the role of Harley Quinn. There were rumors that Lady Gaga was being courted for a role in the film, but those turned out to be false.

While I'm fine with the choices for casting, I can imagine the online outrage to have a back actress play Dinah Lance/ Black Canary in the movie. Seeing that Canary had always been portrayed as a Caucasian woman with blonde hair, I can imagine a lot of angry fanboys already panning the movie for being "SJW" or "forcing diversity."

We'll just have to wait and see who the DCEU ends up casting eventually.

No release date has been set for Birds of Prey.
