Marvel Star Clark Gregg on Phil Coulson Failing to Reunite with the Avengers

Clark Gregg may not have stayed that long in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, his character, Agent Phil Coulson, played a pivotal role in starting the Avengers Initiative at the start of the Marvel franchise.

After dying in Marvel's first Avengers movie, Coulson no longer appeared in the MCU. While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., later on, revealed that Coulson actually lived on to continue fieldwork away from the Avengers, Gregg is still hoping that the agent gets to reunite with the Avengers sometime soon.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is down to its final season, and so, Gregg decided to sit down for an interview with Comic Book to talk about his career with Marvel. During his discussion with the entertainment news outlet, Gregg talked about the devastation that came with Avengers: Endgame and how disappointed he is that Coulson never got to reunite with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) before he sacrificed his life in the film.

When asked which Avenger he'd like Coulson to reunite with the most, he mentioned Captain America (Chris Evans), a character whose arc Endgame also completed.

"Well, I mean, you know, the crush on Cap never dies. But I always, I mean, I felt that same sadness, just because really, the whole thing started, and I think the reason Coulson became what Coulson was really, was about Robert [Downey Jr.] and those scenes together and the repartee," Gregg told the publication, "He makes you that much better and brings out so much more than you might normally see in a scene. The way that he took those scenes and that character on, brought me to life, in a way, so that I didn't get to have that."

It's such a shame that Coulson never got to cameo in Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers: Endgame. Of course, we don't really blame the Russo Brothers. They had so many characters to fit in their two-part Avengers movie already.
