Marvel President Kevin Feige Explains The MCU Phases

Avengers: Endgame is making its way to cinemas next week. Not only will the film close the curtain on Joe and Anthony Russo's two-part Avengers movie, but Endgame will also culminate the past ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing on a new phase of the franchise.

Speaking in an interview with the New York Times, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige explains the history of the franchise and how it leads up to Avengers: Endgame. During the discussion, Feige also reveals what exactly inspired Marvel's different "Phases," saying that the term was inspired by Marvel comics' "mega-events."

"I didn't want to merely think of an Iron Man trilogy or a Thor trilogy... It all came from the comics, individual characters would occasionally come together for a mega-event limited series, in which everything would change, and then they would go back into their own comics, with the new powers or the new costumes or the psychological changes from that big adventure," Feige says, explaining why he started using phrases like "Phase 1 of the MCU."

Phase 1 of the franchise introduced the original six Avengers, while Phase 2 featured the growing world of the MCU. Phase 3 of the franchise tore the group apart as it introduced even more heroes into the Marvel roster. Avengers: Endgame marks the end of Phase 3, ushering in a new age to the franchise. The only question left is what exactly this age might bring. Will Phase 4 focus on the Marvel Cosmic Universe, or will it bring in something entirely else? Let's wait and see.

Avengers: Endgame premieres April 26, 2019.
