The spread of the novel coronavirus may have made digital comics more visible over the past few weeks, however, it seems like Marvel is planning to close the Marvel Digital Comics Shop next month.
According to a report by Screen Rant, Marvel is planning to close the Marvel Digital Comics Shop on June 2nd. While this may sound alarming to Marvel comic book readers who've been relying on digital releases during the COVID-19 lockdown, it seems like Marvel comic book fans will still be able to access already-purchased digital books even after the Marvel Digital Comics Shop shuts down in June.
Marvel is still making digital comics available for purchase online, only this time the comics are going to be made available on Comixology.
For the uninitiated, the Marvel Digital Comics Shop exists separately from Marvel's subscription service Marvel Unlimited. The digital comic book store acts much like Comixology which sells single issue comic books as well as Marvel comic book collections and bundles.
It seems like Marvel is shutting down Marvel Digital Comics Shop because of its redundancy when placed alongside Comixology. Of course, closing the digital comic book shop also poses some disadvantages for Marvel Comics – for one it is putting the responsibility of selling Marvel digital comics into the hands of a third-party provider, namely Comixology.
Unfortunately, it seems like the novel coronavirus quarantine has pushed Marvel Comics to its bottom line, and so the company has no choice but to shut down Marvel Digital Comics.
