Marvel Confirms That Loki Was Mind Controlled During First Avengers Movie

I think it's safe to say that Loki officially became a fan-favorite during The Avengers, where he got to show off his charisma and comedic chops. Sure, he was intriguing enough during Thor but the character was able to eat up more of the scenery during the Marvel team's first group effort together. However, due to the nature of the Infinity Stones, many fan theories were made about Loki being controlled by the Mind Stone, which is what Thanos gave the God of Mischief.

Well, Marvel just confirmed this fan theory themselves, which should make a lot of fans happy. This also explains why he was more over-the-top here than in Thor and Thor: The Dark World. He was kind of a wuss in Thor: Ragnarok, but it worked more for the character, given his mischievous nature.

On the character's official description (via Marvel.com), the following is stated:

Arriving at the Sanctuary through a wormhole caused by the Bifrost, Loki met the Other, ruler of the ancient race of extraterrestrials the Chitauri, and Thanos. Offering the God of Mischief dominion over his brother's favorite realm Earth, Thanos requested the Tesseract in return.Gifted with a Scepter that acted as a mind control device, Loki would be able to influence others. Unbeknownst to him, the Scepter was also influencing him, fueling his hatred over his brother Thor and the inhabitants of Earth.

To be fair, this does state that Loki was willing to do Thanos' bidding during the movie but the scepter made his hatred for Thor and Earth grow in an out of control fashion. He's not a good Asgardian/Ice Giant by any means but he's not heartless. Future movies would show a more sympathetic Loki who cares about his brother, coming to the rescue in Thor: Ragnarok and not letting Thanos kill his brother at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War.

Avengers: Endgame comes out on April 26, 2019. There are plans for a Loki series on Disney's streaming service.
