There's been a whole lot of anticipation building up over Star Wars: Episode IX the past few months, so when Lucasfilm finally released the very first teaser trailer for the third and final film, it wasn't a surprise to see fans going wild. However, it seems like one particular Star Wars fan got a bit of flak for his reaction to the trailer on social media.
A Twitter user going by the name of Ashley St. Clair decided to share YouTuber Erik Butt's response to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker's teaser video on her Twitter page, bullying the Star Wars fan and the Star Wars culture.
"Star Wars and super hero movie obsession culture has revealed a whole new population of undateable men. Might be worse than men who wear cargo shorts," Ashley St.Clair wrote on her twitter post.
Noticing the tweet, Star Wars fans and other netizens quickly took to Erik Butt's defense, calling out on the St. Clair for bullying someone reacting to something that he's clearly passionate about. Responding to St. Clair's tweet, netizens slammed the troll for bullying the Star Wars fan for his passionate response to The Rise of Skywalker trailer.
"Being mean and shitty to people doesn't make you interesting," one netizen responded.
"I think it's cool that a piece of art can invoke that kind of emotional reaction in someone, regardless of how you feel about it. Let people enjoy things, no one said you had to date this guy," another one wrote.
Star Wars legend Mark Hamill also defended the fan on Twitter.
"Why anyone would ridicule someone so passionate & clearly enjoying what he's seeing is beyond me," Hamill wrote on his post.
Honestly, there's nothing wrong with Erik Butts reacting the way he did to The Rise of Skywalker's trailer. People should be allowed to like what they like and not be bullied for it.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker premieres December 20, 2019.
