The passengers onboard Flight 828 have long been haunted by mysterious Callings. Ever since their plane mysteriously vanished for five and a half years, their lives have also changed tremendously.
Now that Manifest has come to an end, let's talk about something from the show. What is the Divine Consciousness in Manifest and how does it affect the passengers of the flight?
Ever since the passengers suddenly reappeared in 2018, they've been dealing with the Divine Consciousness. So what is it really and why has it been testing them for the Death Date?
What Is the Divine Consciousness in Manifest?
The meaning of the Divine Consciousness in the Netflix series, Manifest, has been left open to interpretation. The most basic definition for it, however, is a bright, peaceful place wherein the passengers of Flight 828 were trapped in for five and a half years.
Many also point to the Divine Consciousness as a higher power or actions that God produced. The passengers onboard the flight were picked to save the world from the coming Death Date: June 2, 2024.
When their plane reappears in 2018, the passengers start experiencing visions, or Callings. They all share these Callings because their presence in the Divine Consciousness has connected them together.
As the passengers later realized, these Callings do more than just serve as visions to them. In fact, it helps them survive certain incidents once they choose to follow them.
But in the end, all the passengers were judged together on the day of judgment.
How Was the Divine Consciousness Discovered?
The discovery of the Divine Consciousness first started when they retrieved the missing black box from the plane. All of the Callings were found to be captured inside this black box.
After getting the co-pilot of Flight 828 (Captain Amuta) to talk, Saanvi and the Stones learned what really happened on their flight.
As shared by Captain Amuta (played by Leajato Amara Robinson), the Callings recorded in the black box was actually the few seconds when the passengers died.
The co-pilot shared that their plane was surrounded by lightning that hit them over and over. Suddenly, all the lightning formed into a huge ball of pure light before them.
Amuta swears that he thought the plane flew right into the light, which could have been catastrophic for them all.
But even though it sounded like a terrifying ordeal, Amuta shared that he felt calm and at peace. He thought that it was only him and pilot Daly (played by Frank Deal) who saw the light.
It turns out that Cal Stone (played by Jack Messina) also saw the light and said "everything just made sense" when you looked at it. Since Cal was on his seat at that time, the bright light actually chased the plane.
Cal touched the plane's tailfin and then disappeared. He returned to that same light and on board Flight 828 again. This was the first time viewers saw what the Divine Consciousness was.
Cal started to recall the messages that Captain Daly and Fiona Clarke (played by Francesca Faridany) relayed to him.
Together with his sister, Olive (played by Luna Blaise), they were able to collect the symbols and objects: a Peacock that symbolized resurrection, a petroglyph with Gemini twins, and a wooden dragon that symbolized the year 2024.
These symbols pointed to June 2, 2024, which they thought was the Death Date of the passengers from Flight 828.
But apart from these, they still had three other objects with them. Olive pieced together the clues, which suggested that things were not accidental. Cal opened a compass with a phrase "Divina Conscientia". This translated to Divine Consciousness.
