It has been just under two months since Suzume was released in the US, and now, director Makoto Shinkai subtly revealed that he is hard at work on his next anime film.
Shinkai’s latest movie Suzume came with a lot of hype behind it. After all, his previous two films have been big box-office hits, especially Your Name, which became one of the highest-grossing anime films of all time.
When Suzume was finally released, Shinkai’s streak continued, as the film was a success, both critically and commercially.
Suzume Becomes Shinkai’s Second-Highest-Grossing Film
Suzume opened in Japan back in November 2022, and it quickly became the number-one movie in Japan during its release. It even beat Weathering With You's opening weekend record in the country.
By the end of its theatrical run in Japan, Suzume earned JPY 14.9 billion (around USD 106.9 million), making it one of the highest-grossing films in the country.
The film was also a huge hit in countries such as China and South Korea where it became the top-earning anime film of all time.
Though aside from Asia, the film did well in countries all over the world, including the US.
Currently, the film has earned USD 321.6 million worldwide. This makes it the fourth highest-grossing Japanese movie of all time worldwide. It is also now Shinkai’s second most successful film after Your Name.
Box office numbers aside, Suzume was also praised by critics around the world, with the film getting a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
On top of this, Suzume was also selected to be part of the main competition at the prestigious 73rd Berlin International Film Festival – the first anime film to do so since Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away.

Makoto Shinkai Subtly Teases New Anime Film on Twitter
Given that it hasn’t even been a year since Suzume was released, it’s likely that we won’t see an official announcement of Shinkai’s next film anytime soon. Though he did subtly reveal that he’s working on a new movie.
On Twitter, Shinkai shared a picture of his notes on his computer, and fans spotted a note titled “NewFilm 2”, which many believe to be his next movie project.
This isn’t the first time that Shinkai indicated his work on a new movie.
After all, he also revealed in an interview back in April that he’s preparing for his next project.
Given that Shinkai has been releasing a new movie every three years, it’s likely that we’ll see his next film get released sometime in 2025.
