Major GTA 6 Leaked 'Footage Screenshot' Debunked

A major Grand Theft Auto 6 circulating this morning has been officially debunked. On Wednesday, a substantial report about GTA 6 surfaced online, sharing details about a Vice City (Miami) setting, a female protagonist, and a 2023-2024 release window among other details that line up with what previous reports have claimed before. The report was also followed by a leak that is said to be the first images of GTA 6.

The leak was shared by popular Twitter outlet GTA 6 News & Leaks, which showed some images of what looked like they could have been the first images of the highly-anticipated next installment of Rockstar's popular video game franchise. The images were sent by an anonymous source claiming as much, but it turns out that they were actually from The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience.

For those unfamiliar, The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience is a technical demo that's an original concept set within the world of Warner Bros' The Matrix. Written and cinematically directed by Lana Wachowski, it features Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprising their iconic roles as Neo and Trinity also playing themselves.

At this point of GTA 6's development, it's possible for images from the game to leak and for them to resemble a complete product. GTA 6 developer Rockstar Games has a strong reputation for being secretive with their upcoming titles. It's rare to see anything leaked out of unfinished projects, but it does happen. One of the most memorable examples involves Red Dead Redemption 2. Long before its release, the action-adventure game's entire map was leaked, and many people thought it was fake, only to realize later that it was actually real.
