Magic: The Gathering Head Designer Talks About Mechanics For Potential Future Design

The Magic: The Gathering designers at Wizards of the Coast are always finding ways to create new cards with new mechanics to provide players an innovative game experience when they release a new Magic set, and today, MTG head designer Mark talked about designing mechanics that we may see in future Magic sets.

In a blog post titled The Future of Magic, Rosewater talked about the "most robust areas" of future design, and in addition to the expansion of old mechanics and rehabilitation of failed mecahnics (like they did with Devotion), he also lists down mechanics similar to what we've seen in silver-bordered sets such as additional "decks", minigames, as well as other design categories like cards that affect deck construction, cards that can't go in your deck, card components outside the deck, and top-down designs.

These cards from various silver-bordered sets let players play a seperate minigame:

Although Rosewater didn't confirm if any of these innovative mechanics will make it in an upcoming Magic set, it's good to know that he and his design team are continually looking to find ways to evolve the game with these fun mechanics. Of course, they also have to make sure that the new designs are balanced, and not ruin tournament play.

What kind of new mechanic would you like to see in the future of Magic? Would you like to see mechanics we've seen in silver-bordered sets in Standard-legal sets? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
