Magic: The Gathering Commander Play Tripled In The Last Two Years, WOTC Says

2020 is a big year for Magic: The Gathering Commander players, and the Year of the Commander is heading to its exciting conclusion with the release of two brand new products: Commander Legends, the first-ever Commander set designed to be drafted, and Commander Collection: Green, a collector's item featuring new versions of some of Commander's most iconic green cards.

To help convince Wizards Play Network game stores to play into Commander's popularity, Wizards of the Coast shared some interesting facts about the Commander format.

WotC described it as "one of Magic's most popular and fastest growing formats" as it saw 9,000 unique players participating in Commander events in WPN stores, and by February 2020, that number had tripled — about 28,000 unique players a week.

The affiliated stores hosted 61 Commander events over the past year, which totals to more than one Commander event per week. WPN stores that hosted Commander events sold 14% more tickets overall.

Commander started back in the mid-2000s as a casual singleton format known as Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH), and at first WOTC didn't provide enough support for the fan-favorite format, but as its popularity grew, the company gave it an offiical name and rules.
