Magic: The Gathering Arena Black Screen Issue Shuts Gameplay Following New Update

Following the maintenance performed for Magic: The Gathering Arena's 1.09 update on Thursday, players reported experiencing multiple issues ranging from black screen, dropped games, no play queues, and no in-game chats. The MTG Arena patch that's meant to add the new Core Set 2021 turned out to be a technical disaster with many players not being able to play the free-to-play card game due to a "black screen."

Wizards of the Coast has addressed the black screen problem on Twitter, and said that they're currently investigating it. The company is asking players to submit game logs of the black screen to help fix the issue promptly, but that's not the only issue players are reporting; they're also reporting no play queues showing up, dropped games in Limited, no notifications appearing, and broken chat feature. In-game social features have been disabled as part of their on-going investigation.

Players experiencing any issues should report them to WotC in the form of a ticket. The company hasn't announced a specific time on when these issues will be resolved, but the MTG Arena team is working to fix them.

Core Set 2021 is set to release on July 3 with Prerelease events scheduled from June 26 to July 2. Jumpstart is set to launch on July 17.
