Magical girl fans were treated to an exciting announcement at Aniplex Online Fest recently, as the new Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime film was confirmed to be released early next year.
Along with the film’s release date, the first proper trailer for the movie was shared, giving fans their first look at the iconic magical girls in action after years.
Also revealed at the event are the show’s director and animation studio, as well as the voice cast members who are confirmed to return.
New Madoka Magica Movie Finally Gets a Trailer
Madoka Magica is an infamous magical girl anime by Shaft, the studio behind the Monogatari series and Fate/Extra Last Encore.
The new anime film in the franchise, titled Puella Magi Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht: Rising-, was announced back in April 2021 during the series’ 10th anniversary. Since then, no further details about it have been revealed.
Finally, a new trailer for the upcoming series was shared at Aniplex Online Fest 2023.
This new trailer features a look at the film’s cast. Long-time fans will also likely get some hints about the film’s story in the trailer, which you can watch here:
Aniplex also confirmed during its recent event that the new film will see the original staff return. Director Yukihiro Miyamoto (who directed the original anime) is confirmed to helm this upcoming film.
Joining Miyamoto is chief director Akiyuki Shinbo, who is an iconic Shaft staff member. The film is also bringing back writer Gen Urobuchi, the well-known writer of shows like Psycho-Pass and Fate/Zero.
Also returning are the original voice actors from the anime and the films.

Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht: Rising- Reveals Winter 2024 Release
This original 12-episode anime was followed up by three anime films. The first two are compilation films while the third film, Rebellion, is a proper sequel.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht: Rising- is confirmed to be a follow-up to Rebellion. This is despite the divisive response to the film.
Still, it’ll be interesting to see where this next movie will take the story. After all, the previous movie ended in a rather open-ended fashion.
Madoka Magica -Walpurgisnacht: Rising- will be released in Winter 2024. For now, there’s no word yet on a specific release date, nor is there word on theatrical release plans for the film outside of Japan.
Given how common anime screenings have become in the US though, it won’t be a surprise to see this film get a US cinema release, even if it’s limited.
