Charlize Theron as Furiosa

Mad Max: Furiosa will hit theaters on May 24, 2024. The movie was initially set to premiere on June 23, 2023, but the September announcement notified fans of the schedule change. The pandemic may be the main cause of the delay, which may have affected the film's production.

Mad Max: Fury Road Lawsuits Also Delayed the Production of Mad Max: Furiosa

The production of Mad Max: Furiosa began after director George Miller completed his romance epic Three Thousand Years of Longing, starring Tilda Swinton and Edris Alba. Miller could not work on Furiosa right after finishing Fury Road when his production company, Kennedy Miller Mitchell, filed a case against Warner Bros. Kennedy Miller Mitchell accused Warner Bros. of "destroying" its relationship by choosing not to pay the production company a bonus for completing Fury Road under budget.

Warner Bros. filed a countersuit against Kennedy Miller Mitchell, accusing it of breaking the contract over the runtime and rating of Fury Road.

Anya Taylor-Joy in Queen's Gambit

The cast of Mad Max: Furiosa is made up of new faces who are up to the challenge of maintaining the same level of excellence as Fury Road.

Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiosa

On October 13, 2020, Warner Bros. confirmed that Anya Taylor-Joy will be taking on the role of a young Furiosa. Reports about her casting first came out in March 2020, around the same time when Miller was interviewing actors for the film, including Jodie Comer from Killing Eve.

Taylor-Joy has starred in many remarkable films. She broke into the Hollywood scene with her role in The Witch and later headed the cast for Thoroughbreds, Split, Glass, and Autumn de Wilde's Emma. She is most known for her portrayal of the chess prodigy Beth Harmon in the Netflix limited series The Queen's Gambit.

In an interview with MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast, Taylor-Joy talked about landing the lead role in Mad Max: Furiosa and how matching Charlize Theron' just can't be done.'

I fell in love with Furiosa because of the way Charlize presented her. She did such an incredible job. It was so beautiful. I can't even think about trying to step into her shoes. It has to be something different because it just can't be done.

She also said:

I've already started dreaming about [Furiosa] and she's coming in very strong. I'm so committed to working as hard as possible as I can. I always said that I wanted a role that I would have to give everything to, it wouldn't just be my mind but my body, what I'm doing with myself when I'm not on set. I'm so excited for that and to push myself past the limits of what my brain thought was possible.

Charlize Theron on Letting Go of Furiosa

Fans of the Mad Max franchise first met and fell in love with Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road. Charlize Theron's portrayal of the former war general was one of the biggest reasons the film was a success, becoming a pop culture phenomenon when it came out. But because Mad Max director George Miller wanted to make a prequel focusing on the young Furiosa, the character had to be re-cast to someone younger. In one of her interviews, Theron talked about how it has affected her:

It's a tough one to swallow. Listen, I fully respect George, if not more so in the aftermath of making Fury Road with him. He's a master, and I wish him nothing but the best. Yeah, it's a little heartbreaking, for sure. I really love that character, and I'm so grateful that I had a small part in creating her. She will forever be someone I think of and reflect on fondly. Obviously, I would love to see that story continue, and if he feels like he has to go about it this way, then I trust him in that manner. We get so hung up on the smaller details that we forget the thing that we emotionally tap into has nothing to do with that minute thing that we're focusing on.

Miller originally played around with using de-aging visual effect technology on Theron but decided against it because he thought the technology still has a long way to go.

Miller talked about using VFX during a 2020 interview with The New York Times, where he said:

For the longest time, I thought we could just use CG de-aging on Charlize, but I don't think we're nearly there yet. Despite the valiant attempts on 'The Irishman,' I think there's still an uncanny valley. Everyone is on the verge of solving it, particularly Japanese video-game designers, but there's still a pretty wide valley, I believe.

Chris Hemsworth is Tom Burk

Christ Hemsworth joins the cast with Tom Burk, who took the place of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II after scheduling conflicts. On August 23, 2022, The Daily Mail shared photos of Hemsworth on set of Mad Max: Furiosa, giving us the first look at Tom Burk.

Immortan Joe

Most of the key creative team members for Mad Max: Furiosa also worked in Mad Max: Fury Road.

George Miller will direct the film based on the screenplay he wrote with Nick Lathouris. John Seale, known to turn down other projects, has been in semi-retirement since Mad Max: Fury Road and will return to be the cinematographer for Furiosa. Seale has earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography for Fury Road.

Oscar-award-winning editor Margaret Sixel, married to Miller, returns to edit Furiosa. In an interview with The New York Times in May 2020, Sixel spoke about her disagreements with Warner Bros. during the editing process for Fury Road.

There was this constant thing from the studio: 'How much shorter is it?' That's all they wanted to know. I just got so sick of it. They were just obsessed with getting the film under 100 minutes, which I knew was impossible. It was an incredibly painful film to cut. I think the studio didn't believe in it, so it was really difficult to keep going. Eventually George and I decided, 'We're just going to make the film we want to make, and if no one else likes it, that's fine.' And that last four months is when the film really came together

Colin Gibson returns as the production designer for Furiosa. He has worked with Miller in many films like Babe, Happy Feet, Happy Feet Two, and Fury Road, which earned him many awards like the Academy Award for Best Production Design.

The other returning crew members are sound mixer Ben Osmo and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, both of whom earned recognition thanks to their work in Fury Road. PJ Voeten and Guy Norris also return as the first assistant director and second unit director/stunt coordinator, respectively.
