The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songs and Snakes is all set for its theatrical release on Friday. But there's one detail about the show that's taking center stage: Lucy Gray Baird’s dress.

Photos of the dress have already circulated on social media ahead of the film's premiere on Friday, November 17th. And so far, fans are divided on how the dress looks.

Fans first spotted Lucy Gray's dress as part of an exhibit at a Las Vegas event to showcase how the new movie differs from the crazy Capitol fashion seen in the previous The Hunger Games instalments.

While there are some fans who praised the flamboyant rainbow dress, others called it "ugly."

"it's supposed to be hideous guys it's literally a mid century, post war, coal industrial handmade piece and yall expected her to be wearing a full gorgeous rainbow gown like this is ru pauls drag race or something 🤣"

Some fans also defended Lucy Gray Baird's dress on Reddit and explained the context behind its look.

"Yes, but it was still made during a post-war era. We know there was some sort of big apocalypse sometime well before the original rebellion. Anything made outside the capital would likely be hand made and of lesser quality than what the capitol citizens had access to."

Some also referenced how the dress was described in the books and said it wasn't "completely accurate" but the "dress is quite pretty!"

"some descriptions of the dress, from the book itself:
"Lucy Gray Baird stood upright in a dress made of a rainbow of ruffles, now raggedy but once fancy."
"The rows of raspberry pink, royal blue, and daffodil yellow ruffles..."
""She looks like a circus performer," one of the girls remarked. The other mentors made sounds of agreement."
"In the chilly air... he thought of Lucy Gray in her sleeveless dress."
so, not completely accurate, but i still think the dress is quite pretty!"

Another fan even shared a sketch she did of how she envisioned the dress would look like.

While the idea for the dress came from the book, Trish Summerville, the film's costume designer, revealed that the dress actually paid tribute to Katniss and Primrose Everdeen.

Summerville revealed that she took inspiration from the book on how to create Lucy Gray Baird's ruffled rainbow dress. But at the same time, she added "tiny little nods" to the lead stars of The Hunger Games franchise.

She told Variety:

"You wanna give something to the fans and you wanna keep them really interested. So, in her corset, I had it all hand-painted with katniss and primrose flowers, and snakes. So it kind of gives a nod to Katniss and Primrose in the other books and the other films."

She also spoke to E! News:

"I wanted to have a tie in to Katniss Everdeen in the Catching Fire movie that I did of her blue Mockingjay dress—with the corset shape. It worked for Lucy as well because she is this vaudeville performer and it's a classic period piece."

Summerville also revealed that they had to make 10 versions of the dress due to the number of stunts that needed to be filmed. Just check out the dress in action here:

In the end, the dress looked amazing on Rachel Zegler. The question is, would you wear it too?
