Lucasfilm Searching For Female Directors For The Star Wars Franchise

The Star Wars franchise might be making steps towards diversity and representation on film, but there have been a lot of complaints that Lucasfilm has failed to work on these things behind the camera.

Now, in a new interview with MTV news, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy talks about the future of the franchise, saying that the studio is going to work towards diversity and inclusiveness on the set of its Star Wars films. According to the Star Wars producer, Lucasfilm is on the hunt for female directors to help helm future entries in the franchise once Star Wars future is all planned out.

"Conversations with Dan (Weiss), David (Benioff), and Rian (Johnson) have been that once we will begin to block out the next ten years is that will be the focus," Kennedy responds after being asked about having more female directors in the Star Wars franchise.

The Star Wars producer also makes mention of female directors that are already on board with Lucasfilm's television projects for Disney's upcoming streaming site, Disney+. According to Kennedy, Lucasfilm already has female directors on board for Star Wars: The Mandalorian (one of which includes Jurassic World star Bryce Dallas Howard) and on board for the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story prequel series starring Diego Luna's Captain Cassian Andor.

For the past few years there's been a strong call for diversity and representation in Hollywood with films like Black Panther, Wonder Woman, and Captain Marvel skyrocketing to success. We hope that Star Wars takes even more steps towards inclusivity in its films and its television series.

Lucasfilm's next movie, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, premieres December 20, 2019.
