Lucas Hedges has already portrayed a homosexual teenager in two of his movies, Lady Bird and Boy Erased. His roles as Danny and Jared are said to be two of his most prominent roles, per Cinemablend.
In an interview with Vulture, he revealed he felt a connection to these two characters, awakening his true feelings when he was just a teenager who was confused if he was straight or gay.

He said,
“I felt ashamed that I wasn't 100 percent, because it was clear that one side of sexuality presents issues, and the other doesn't as much. I recognize myself as existing on that spectrum: Not totally straight, but also not gay and not necessarily bisexual.”
So, when The Advocate asked if he was an ally or a member of the LGTBQ community, he said he was the former.
He explained,
“I'm hesitant at the same time to suddenly lump myself in with [the LGBTQ] community because… I don't feel as though I've been challenged in the same ways that members of the LGBTQ community have been in their lives.”
