Who Is the Narrator in Love at First Sight?
The Narrator is, well, obviously, the narrator of the movie. However, she’s not the kind that merely tells viewers what’s going on – she intervenes too. The Narrator appears throughout the film in different roles and in crucial moments.
She appears in the plane as a flight attendant who ensures Oliver is seated next to Hadley; she appears as a stranger who gives Hadley directions to Peckham House; she gives Oliver Hadley’s bag, which would help him find her again.
Jamil’s character was never named, but given her role in the film, and the fact that the movie does revolve around fate, she could be Fate herself, or perhaps a guardian angel. While there are many couples who could fall in love in a day, to her, “it’s the story of only one that really matters.”
However, it must be noted that even if she intervenes at times, the Narrator does emphasize that “Fate can only be fate if we decide that we want it to be.” So, while she does help the main characters get together, she also gives them choices.
For instance, when she gave Oliver Hadley’s bag, she was giving him a choice whether to “walk away from the love of his life” or not. Ultimately, it was Oliver who made the decision to find Handley.
In the movie’s ending, the Narrator tells us about Hadley and Oliver’s future, and that those things would not have been possible were it not for a missed flight, a broken seat belt, and a choice to love each other every day.
So, the Narrator helped in bringing Hadley and Oliver together, but it was both of them who made the choice to be with each other and love each other.
