Logan Director Reveals Why His Sandman Adaptation Was Never Made

Neil Gaiman's Sandman series continues to get the praise it deserves, not only getting called the next comic book ever but often called a literary work of art in graphic novel form. When you consider how long the original comic is and how much depth each character has, it's easy to see why this wasn't turned into a simple movie. While we are finally getting the series we've all been waiting for, Logan and Indiana Jones 5 director James Mangold revealed why his pitch didn't come into fruition.

Speaking with Discussing Film, Mangold revealed that it had a lot to do with the inner turmoil between HBO and Warner Bros. While HBO did buy his Sandman pitch as a long-form series, it was supposedly undone by Warner Bros. and Neil Gaiman ended up bringing his project elsewhere to see it succeed. Mangold is very happy for Gaiman since Netflix will eventually bring this series to light, once COVID-19 settles down.

"I pitched it to HBO years ago and they bought the pitch as a long form series, and then it got undone by a political turf war at WB. Regardless, now it's happening and I am so happy for Neil who I think is a marvelous person as well as a supremely brilliant artist."

Mangold was also asked about other projects and he declined to comment since all Hollywood projects are very hush-hush these days. Hopefully, Indiana Jones 5 ends up being a huge hit so Mangold becomes more sought after. The director's work on Logan was exemplary and we can't wait to see what he has to show us.

Indiana Jones 5 will be coming out on July 29, 2022. Sandman does not have a release date, as of this writing.
