Lisa Frankenstein is a coming-of-age story about a misunderstood girl with a deadly crush.

Lisa (played by Kathryn Newton) is not like any other girl her age. While girls her age like to party and chase after boys, she has a crush on someone else. Yes, he may still be a boy, but he's the bust on top of a gravestone.

Fortunately for Lisa, the boy she's crushing on (played by Cody Sprouse) is brought back to life. And although he's missing a few body parts, they set on to look for happiness together.

So why do people think Lisa Frankenstein is an Edward Scissorhands rip-off? That's because the two films bear a nearly similar storyline.

Lisa Frankenstein is basically a rehashed story based on Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. With this story as a base, Diablo Cody has kept Lisa Frankenstein up to the times by infusing it with relatable characters and dilemmas faced by today's youth.

Meanwhile, Edward Scissorhands is a cult classic from the 90's. The Tim Burton classic film starred Winona Ryder, the subject of Edward (played by Johnny Depp), a man-made construct's affection.

Unlike Lisa Frankenstein, Edward Scissorhands is not a corpse. He is an artificial human with scissor blades as hands created by a scientist who died while his creation wasn't finished yet.

In Lisa Frankenstein's case, Sprouse's character, aka The Creature, is a corpse that was brought back to life.

Perhaps one of the reasons why people are comparing the two is because they have somewhat similar storylines-- a female teenager who feels misunderstood by her peers and falls in love with a creature. Not to mention, the two films give off a similar vibe.

A tweet says the film's director, Zelda Williams, drew inspiration from Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands and Beetlejuice. But we can't find an interview with her giving this answer.

With these things, it's easy to think they can either be connected or a rip-off of another. But if there's anything to credit for this storyline, it would definitely be Mary Shelley's influential novel, Frankenstein, which has inspired similar stories in cinema.

It's also important to note that we don't know yet what happens at the end of Lisa Frankenstein since it's still scheduled for release in theaters on February 9, 2024.
