Koko and Inupi’s bond in particular is one of the most controversial, as they went a long way even before they became Toman members. Koko and Inupi’s Shared History With Akane Inui
From the very beginning, Koko and Inupi have always been friends. Their personalities matched, and they were pretty comfortable in each other’s presence, going so far as to spend their after-school days together.
Like all boys their age, they enjoy playing games, even though Koko is not into ball games. He also hates riding motorbikes, whereas Inupi is fascinated by them. Despite their opposing interests, Koko and Inupi are inseparable.
Akane Inui, on the other hand, plays a huge part in Inupi and Koko’s childhood days. She is Inupi’s older sister, and she has always been spending time with them despite their five-year age difference.
This explains why Koko became fascinated with Akane and why he was so drawn to her. At the time, Koko was at the age where he was fascinated with girls like Akane.
Of course, Akane is not like any ordinary girl. She has the same interests as Koko and Inupi, which results in a bond that only the three of them understand and appreciate.
Tragedy intervenes, and Akane dies after a fire breaks into the Inui household. While Inupi survived the tragedy, Akane succumbed to her burn wounds, much to Koko’s dismay.
She died because the Inui family couldn’t afford the 40 million yen needed to treat her. This explains why Koko is so obsessed with making money.
He was one of the first to brave the house fire to rescue Akane, but the person he brought out alive was Inupi, in the belief that he was Akane.
In case you didn’t know, Akane and Inupi look alike, and it’s not impossible that Koko will make a mistake identifying the two of them.
This incident greatly affected Koko and Inupi’s relationship, even after they became gang members in Black Dragon and Toman.

The Controversial Koko and Inupi Kiss Scene in Tokyo Revengers Explained
After Akane’s death, Koko, who’s fascinated with Akane, sees the love of his life in Inupi. This is the reason Koko would often compare him to Akane and even kiss him.
He simply can’t move on from Akane’s death, and his coping mechanism involves Inupi, who looks like Akane even though the latter is much more beautiful.
Fans also think that the kiss between Koko and Inupi is just out of Koko’s frustration because he can’t have Akane anymore. He diverted all of his affection to Inupi since he saw Akane in him.
Even though their friendship is genuine, there’s a part of Koko who sees Inupi as a replacement for Akane.
Understandably, Akane died at a very young age, and it doesn’t help that both Koko and Inupi were also young during the incident.
Her death messed up their heads, and unfortunately, the two of them had to rely on each other to move forward with their lives.
