Monogatari series fans now have a reason to go to cinemas as Kizumonogatari is back in Japanese theaters. To promote the movie series’ return to the big screen, Kizumonogatari has taken over the real-life Shinjuku-sanchome train station in Tokyo.

Train station takeovers aren’t new for anime and manga. They’re a popular marketing tactic as thousands of people pass through these stations every day, making them effective for marketing campaigns.

Most anime takeovers happen in Shibuya, but that’s not the case for the new Monogatari compilation film release.

Kizumonogatari is a three-part movie series by Shaft that was originally released in Japan from 2016 to 2017. This film trilogy is a prequel to Bakemonogatari, which was the first entry in the Monogatari anime.

Even though it has been years since the trilogy’s cinema run in Japan, it was revealed back in September 2023 that the movies will return to the big screen, albeit in a compilation film.

This upcoming release is titled Kizumonogatari -Koyomi Vamp-, and it finally premiered in Japanese cinemas today.

Fans in North America won’t have to book tickets to Japan though, as the compilation film will also be released in the region soon.

As part of the film’s promotion, lots of Kizumonogatari posters have popped up in Tokyo, though the most eye-catching ones are found in Shinjuku-sanchome Station in Tokyo.

Right now, fans can visit this subway station (not to be confused with the above-ground Shinjuku Station) and see posters and images of Koyomi Araragi and Kiss-Shot.

Shinjuku-sanchome Station Is an Important Location in the Story

The choice of a Shinjuku-sanchome station takeover is a bit different as most station promotions are done in Shibuya, which is arguably Tokyo’s most iconic district.

There is a good reason for this though, as it’s a reference to the film’s events.

In Kizumonogatari, Shinjuku-sanchome station is a key location, where Koyomi and Kiss-Shot first meet. This is highlighted in the various posters that are plastered all over the real-life station right now.

Aside from getting to see the film in theaters, Japanese fans can also spot this station takeover now until January 15, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Kizumonogatari -Koyomi Vamp- compilation film’s North American release has no release date yet.

You can expect to hear more about its release soon as it’s confirmed to screen in theaters this year.
