Game of Thrones legend Kit Harington has finally joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Dane Whitman in 2021's Eternals. Harington's MCU debut may not be that monumental, but it wasn't until the post-credits scene foreshadowed a more prominent role for Whitman, seeing him about to pick up the mystical and infamous sword known as the Ebony Blade.
Although we never saw Whitman wielding the Ebony Blade, this was a clear hint that he was the Black Knight all along and will return in the subsequent MCU projects. There were also rumors that Whitman would be joining Mahershala Ali’s upcoming Blade reboot, but according to Harington himself, Marvel Studios is apparently still keeping him in the dark.
During an interview with Josh Horowitz, Eternals star Kit Harington opened up about the possibility of returning as Dane Whitman, while also admitting that he still has no idea about his character's MCU future.
“I, again…and this is true: I don’t know much of what they’re planning. And you know, I hope to be involved in future stuff, with that character, with Dane Whitman, and that he might go on and be the thing that everyone quotes at me in the street. But I honestly don’t know. I don’t know what their plans are. I know they’re going into a kind of Phase 5…”
The mysterious voice in the Eternals post-credits scene calling Whitman to wield the sword is no other than Mahershala Ali, who will debut as Blade in 2023. When asked whether he would join Ali in the film, he responded:
“I don’t know. I know that, you know, obviously Mahershala’s voices came in at the end of Eternals, but you just don’t know where they’ll take it. And really, and I mean this genuinely and people never believe you when you say this, but they don’t tell us much really. And I think for good reason, because we’ll be in an interview like this and we’ll go and spill the beans.”
Knowing Marvel Studios and their rigorous non-disclosure agreement with their actors, there's a big chance that Harington was just playing coy in this interview. Remember when Andrew Garfield boldly denied his inclusion in Spider-Man: No Way Home?
In Marvel Comics, Dane Whitman is a significant character who at one point, even joined the Avengers. Now that the MCU is expanding and is evidently following the comics as their primary source material, this plainly suggests that there are exciting things ahead for Whitman as he develops into the Black Knight.
