At least one person in the crowd who waited for King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla in Yorkshire wasn't very welcoming to them. However, the man who showed no respect to the king was detained.

Protester Throws Eggs At King Charles And Queen Consort Camilla in York

King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla greeted the crowd during a walkabout in York Wednesday. Many people joined the city leaders in welcoming the royal couple to York.

However, one protester threw eggs at them, all of which missed. The protester yelled "boo" to the couple and shouted, "this country was built on the blood of slaves." The man was immediately detained by the responding officers, The Guardian reported.

Meanwhile, King Charles was unfazed and continued greeting the crowd. He even participated in the traditional ceremony in which the sovereign is officially welcomed to York by the lord mayor through the gates to the city.

Why Did King Charles And Queen Consort Camilla Visit York?

The royal couple visited Yorkshire to carry out a number of engagements. They also attended the unveiling of a statue of Queen Elizabeth II, the first to be installed since she passed away on Sept. 8.

"The late Queen was always vigilant for the welfare of her people during her life. Now her image will watch over what will become Queen Elizabeth Square for centuries to come," King Charles said while speaking at the ceremony at York Minster.

The Queen's two-meter statue weighs 1.1 tonnes and is made from lepine limestone from France. It was designed to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and was completed in August, a month before Her Majesty died.

Who Is The Man Who Threw Eggs At King Charles And Queen Consort Camilla?

According to reports, the protester who threw eggs at the king was Patrick Thelwell. He was the Green Party's candidate at York local elections in 2019, but he missed out and failed to be elected for any of the three seats in that ward by coming fourth with 626 votes.

York Green Party leader Cllr Andy D'Agorne slammed Thelwell's behavior toward the king and distanced himself from the party's former candidate.

"He is not involved in the local party and not on the list of selected candidates," D'Agorne told YorkMix. "Action such as alleged throwing of eggs is totally unacceptable."

When he was 19 and the candidate for Hull Road, Thelwell was arrested as part of an Extinction Rebellion protest blocking Waterloo Bridge in London in April 2019.

Thelwell is also a student at the University of York. The university spokesperson also didn't tolerate his behavior saying it was "appalled" by the images and would be reviewing the incident in line with its misconduct procedures.
