Kevin Smith Wrote To Star Wars Director J.J. Abrams About A Wild Rey Mother Theory

After the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there were so many theories about Rey's (Daisy Ridley) parents circulating online, and one of these theories shocked cult director and pop culture connoisseur Kevin Smith so much he just had to call J.J. Abrams.

Smith's always been a huge fan of the Star Wars saga, and during one of his latest Fatman on Batmanpodcast episodes, he and his co-host Marc Bernardine decided to talk about the various Star Wars sequel trilogy theories that have been going around online.

Starting off with the discussion with a theory about a plan to introduce Ahsoka into the films by making her more prominent in the various Star Wars animated series that Disney has been producing, Smith notes how the saga needs more strong female characters.

"We were talking about [Star Wars: The] Clone Wars coming back and I said to him, 'I got a theory that that's the way to start introducing Ahsoka slowly into the live-action movies by bringing her back prominently in the cartoon,'" Smith recalled a discussion he had with his friend on the podcast. "Because now that they don't have Princess Leia stories to tell, they need another strong female character in the universe and Ahsoka's been there for years, much beloved, just isn't in the movies."

According to Smith, the discussion with his friend goes further, with the theory that Star Wars: Episode IX's Keri Russell could actually be playing both Ahsoka and Rey's mother.

"So I was like, 'I think maybe they're doing that so they can slowly bring her into the movies.' And then Brian [Volk–Weiss] blows my f-ckin' mind by going, 'Maybe that's who Keri Russell's playing?' and then I said, 'What the f-ck, man?! I wanna see your version of Star Wars!' Then I was like, 'No, that can't be it, I think Keri Russell probably plays Rey's mom,' and then he f-ckin' drops the bomb and he goes, 'What if it's the same person?'" the director elaborated.

It might seem a bit farfetched for Keri Russell to be playing Ahsoka, but there have been quite a number of fans speculating that the actress' unnamed character might turn out to be Rey's mother. However, being the enthusiastic fanboy that he was, Smith decided to contact Star Wars director J.J. Abrams anyway, telling him that it would be a great idea to connect Ahsoka and Rey.

"So, instantly, I wrote to JJ Abrams, 'You must do this.' Could you imagine? That would be f-ckin' wild," Smith said jokingly. "I don't think it is, but that was one of the greatest fan theories I've ever heard about. Wouldn't that be hot? Not only is Ahsoka in these movies but she's f-ckin' Rey's mom! And somewhere, Rian Johnson's like, 'What the f-ck?! I said no! I said they were trash!'"

Sure the theory that Ahsoka and Rey's mother are one and the same person, but Rey doesn't look anything like a Togruta at all. Besides, it would also counter The Last Jedi's revelation that Rey's parents were nobodies, just junkers on Jakkuu who sold her off for drinking money.
