Kevin Feige Explains Why Black Panther Deserves Recognition At The Oscars

Black Panther made waves when it first premiered earlier this week. Not only was the film the very first standalone superhero movie for Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa, it was also Marvel's very first all-black comic book film. Black Panther gained both critical and commercial success, receiving overwhelming support from fans and critics.

Because of its success, Black Panther became the first blockbuster of the year to become one of the contenders of the Academy Awards, and though the film won't be able to join this year's Oscar's because of its release, Marvel is still hoping to see the film soar at the event the next time it comes around.

Sitting down to speak with journalists during a press event for Ant-Man and the Wasp, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked by Vox whether the studio would be working on an Oscar campaign for Black Panther.

According to Marvel's head honcho, he would love to see Black Panther get some recognition, even though the Academy Awards has been known to be tough on the comic book genre.

"I think there are a lot of amazing artists that helped to make that movie, and it would be wonderful if they could be recognized. Almost everyone involved in that movie, bringing that movie together, is great, and it would be wonderful to see if they're recognized. We'll see. This genre, typically not."

It might be difficult to break through the Academy Awards though – the Oscars don't usually recognize big blockbuster movies, especially those that come from the comic book movie genre. Though the Wolverine swan song Logan managed to win a nomination for a writing award, superhero films are usually left for the technical department, earning nominations and awards in the Oscars for costume design, cinematography, sound design and so on and so forth.

Though next year's Oscars could very well follow the same path, we're hoping that Black Panther changes things for everyone.

Ant-Man and the Wasp hits cinemas July 6.
