Kelly Marie Tran Opens up About Toxic Star Wars Fans and Personal Mental Health

It's no secret that Kelly Marie Tran decided to leave social media because of hateful comments about her character Rose Tico. Since then, the Star Wars actress has chosen not to comment extensively on the fandom's toxicity. However, Tran is finally opening up about toxic fans and the importance of her personal mental health.

Tran was first introduced as Rose in Star Wars: The Last Jedi where her character made some decisions that didn't sit well with fans. This led to major backlash as people started hating Rose as well as Tran all over social media.

Tran ultimately left social media and in an interview with Teen Vogue, Raya and the Last Dragon pointed out that it was important for her to put her mental health first.

"For me, I knew that the most important thing was to protect my mental health, and make myself space where I felt like I could create again and where I could be an artist again, which for a time, I didn't know if I could do that again," Tran said. She then added that celebrities should not have to deal with constant harassment.

"I recognize my own privilege and understand that there are some people who have to be on social media for their work and their positions. The thing about it that makes me really upset is just what you were saying at the beginning of us initially speaking, where it's like, why are we as artists, or as writers, or as creators in the spaces on social media, why are we the ones that have to normalize receiving harassment? That should not be OK," Tran stated.

There is little doubt that Tran has grown so much since she left social media. Hopefully, people will learn that bullying actor because of the roles that they play should not be normalized.
