Kathleen Kennedy Addresses Mark Hamill's Potential Return in New Star Wars Movie

During the recent Star Wars Celebration event, one of the projects that Lucasfilm announced as part of the franchise's theatrical film slate is the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy project which is set around 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Daisy Ridley is reprising the role of Rey, who is rebuilding the Jedi Order in the new movie.

Some fans have been wondering whether the film will also bring back some of the characters from the sequel trilogy including Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker, who could show up as a Force ghost as shown in The Rise of Skywalker and provide guidance on Rey's new adventure.

Speaking with IGN (via Variety), Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy laid out more details about Rey's return to the Obaid-Chinoy project where she iterated the story's focus on rebuilding the Jedi Order after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

"Well we’re 15 years out from Rise of Skywalker, so we’re post-war, post-First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray. There’s a lot of discussion around, ‘Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What’s the state of the galaxy?’ She’s attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books, based on what she promised Luke, so that’s where we’re going," she said.

When asked about whether Hamill could return as Force ghost Luke Skywalker, Kennedy played coy about the possibility as she is unsure yet whether they will take that direction in the film.

She added, "I don’t know if we’ll spend a lot of time in flashbacks or [on] Force ghosts or things like that, but certainly, the spirit of what he represents to her is going to be significant."

While she didn't give a definite answer on Hamill's potential return, it sounds like they are open to bringing him back in that capacity. For now, it would be interesting to see whether they'll decide to bring him back in the new movie even if it's just a cameo appearance.
