Kate Winslet Sets New Underwater-Breathing Record in Avatar 2

Some lives were changed when Kate Winslet assumed the role of Rose DeWitt Bukater-Dawson-Calvert in the 1997 blockbuster Titanic. Who can ever forget the emotional water scenes between her and Leonardo DiCaprio? Recently, Winslet has gotten back in the ocean as she stars in the sequel to another megahit, Avatar.

Award-winning director James Cameron once more pushes the limits of art and technology with Avatar: The Way of Water as he utilizes motion capture technology that has never before been accomplished underwater. The actors faced a challenge to act in the water as they dive in the ocean of Hawaii.

Despite the struggle of performing underwater, the Mare of Easttown star beat Tom Cruise's Mission Impossible on-set record for holding breath underwater as she successfully held her breath seven minutes and 12 seconds during the shoot of Avatar 2.

In a recent interview, Winslet commented on her accomplishment, “It was brilliant and I was very proud of myself and I’ll probably never be able to do it again,”

“That came at the end of four weeks worth of quite intense training and it was in the dive tank, it was in the training tank. But I loved it,” narrated the Holiday actress.

Winslet initially refused to be filmed, but her husband insisted, resulting in her having a video as she emerged from the water asking for her timestamp.

She recalled, “I have a video of me surfacing saying, ‘Am I dead? Have I died?’ And then going ‘what was it?’ - straightaway I wanted to know my time.”

“I couldn’t believe that it was 7.15 but having been told it’s 7.15 - you want to know what the next thing I say is? We need a radio set.” emphasized The Reader star.

Avatar 2 marks Cameron and Winslet reunion, with the latter joining the franchise as Ronal, the leader of the water-based Metkayina clan. The actress found their prior relationship to be very useful as she jumped into the world of Pandora.
