Joss Whedon Talks About Marvel Studios’ Brilliant Relationship With Its Directors

Joss Whedon might no longer be a director for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the filmmaker used to be, and according to the man behind The Avengers, Marvel Studios makes great director choices.

Avengers: Infinity War just had its Blu-Ray release earlier this month, and one of the bonus features of the film's home release was a roundtable commentary from Marvel's directors. Though Whedon had a short number with the DC Extended Universe with Justice League, the filmmaker seems to have remained good friends with the people at Marvel, because the director was invited to join Infinity War's roundtable.

During the roundtable (via Screen Rant), Whedon had a lot of pretty great things to say about the relationship Marvel Studios had with its directors.

"Something Marvel does that is brilliant and it applies to all of us is that nobody here necessarily had the resume to make the next big action film. They were interested in having that person speak they weren't interested in saying, 'look just do, just hit the marks.' They wanted each one of us to bring ourselves to the movie and you can tell, as much as there's a through-line in Marvel, you can definitely tell who's who and what they constantly want to talk about."

Marvel is pretty lenient with its directors. While the studio is in the business of universe building, it tries to give its directors as much creative freedom as possible. Case in point, former Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has his own distinctive style in all of his Marvel movies, and so does Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler, and of course, Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo.
