Jon Landau Confirms Alita: Battle Angel Sequel Is Already In Talks With Original Director

Jon Landau, who produced the Avatar franchise and Alita: Battle Angel, has confirmed that an Alita sequel has already been discussed with original director Robert Rodriguez.

When asked by Screen Rant about any plans or progress in the making of the Alita: Battle Angel sequel, Landau said: “We’re working on it.”

If you can remember, the Alita film was released back in 2019, and while it grossed over $405 million USD at the worldwide box office, not to mention its cliffhanger ending, it remains a mystery as to why it hasn’t had a sequel planned before.

What’s even better is that after Landau spent time working on Avatar 2’s visual effects, he sheds light as to how this experience will surely improve Alita 2, as well.

“I think what we’ve learned from Avatar is how much more facial nuance and subtlety that we can get into characters that we want to be emotional and emote that are humanoid.” Landau shared.

Landau continued on to say, “Alita would not have been possible, but for what we did on Avatar, Avatar: The Way of Water would not be what it is but what we did for Alita.”

“And now let’s put that back and give it back to Alita,” Landau added, “We’re talking to Robert and talking to Rosa, and all is good.”

While an Alita 2 has yet to officially come to fruition, Christoph Waltz, who portrayed Dr. Dyson Ido (Alita’s creator), is already psyched to reprise his role in the upcoming sequel:

“Yes, if that part is what I would like to do, certainly. Definitely.”

Alita: Battle Angel also starred Rosa Salazar as the titular cyborg, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, and Jackie Earle Haley.

For now, Alita: Battle Angel is available to stream on various platforms. Meanwhile, Avatar: The Way of Water will be streaming on Disney+ soon.
