Joker Under Fire For Using A Song From Convicted Pedophile Gary Glitter

Joker might have received critical acclaim, but the gritty comic book movie which won Best Picture at this year's Venice Film Festival has also been followed by a shroud of controversy ever since the film's global premiere.

There has been a lot of concern over the film's potential to inspire violence in individuals with the same personality and the same demeanor as Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck – not only have there been reports about the military confirming at least one "credible" threat of mass shooting, but the FBI has been looking into Joker social media posts, too. The New York Police Department even decided to patrol screenings of the film to prevent potential shootings from happening.

Now, it looks like Joker is getting even more flack, this time for using a song by Gary Glitter. Joker audiences have taken to Twitter to criticize the film for using Rock and Roll Part 2, an English Glam rock song by Gary Glitter. The song seems pretty harmless, but Glitter is currently in the middle of a 16-year prison sentence for attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault as well as one count of sex with an underage girl of 13.

Glitter might have enjoyed huge success during Britain's glam rock scene in the 1970s and 1980s, but he immediately fell out of favor in the late '90s after he was first arrested for downloading child pornography.

A lot of the viewers angered by Joker's use of Rock and Roll Part 2 are upset by the fact that the rock star could still be receiving royalties from Warner Brothers.

We understand why fans would be upset by the use of Glitter's song. Todd Phillips could have used any other song for the movie. Was Phillips aware of the controversy he'd cause if he used Rock and Roll Part 2? Was it intentional? What do you think of the controversy surrounding Joker? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Joker is now screening in cinemas.
