Joker To Officially Premiere At Toronto International Film Festival

There's been a whole lot of excitement building up over Todd Phillips Joker movie. Starring Joaquin Phoenix, the film presents itself as a gritty character study of Gotham's Clown Prince of Crime and many fans expect the Academy Award-winning star to give Heath Ledger's iteration of Joker a run for his money.

Now, as Joker approaches its commercial release date, it's been officially confirmed that the movie is set to premiere at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.

Toronto International Film Festival co-heads Joana Vicente and Cameron Bailey have just recently announced (via Vanity Fair) the festival's first round of titles for the 2019 Gala and Special Presentations program, and it looks like Joker is going to be part of the event.

"Some of the year's biggest films will land in Toronto this September," Bailey said in a press release issued to the media, We're thrilled to unveil Galas and Special Presentations that bring the brightest lights in film to our Festival audience. Our new programming team has been hard at work for months to deliver the compelling stories, acclaimed filmmakers, and top onscreen talent that mark our two highest-profile sections."

Joker making its world premiere at a film festival like TIFF barely comes as a surprise. Phoenix and Phillips have been seemingly against classifying the upcoming film as a traditional comic book movie and based on the trailer, it looks like it won't be that either. In fact, the film isn't part of the DC Extended Universe – instead, suggestions have been made to place the film in an entirely different DC banner.

Joker is slated for release on October 4, 2019.
