Joker Star Joaquin Phoenix Shocked Crew By Improvising Fridge Scene

It's no secret that Joaquin Phoenix improvised a lot of things while working on Joker. However, there was one scene that even the crew of the Todd Phillips film was not expecting because nobody thought Phoenix would actually cram himself inside a refrigerator.

Cinematographer Lawrence Sher recently spoke to Slash Film about his experience on the set of Joker, confirming that most of the scenes were planned. However, nobody expected Phoenix to throw everything out of the fridge and crawl into the appliance.

"When he climbed in the refrigerator, we had no idea he was going to do that. We set up two camera positions, and Joaquin just thought about what he would do if he was a massive insomniac. Again, we lit it so he could go anywhere, and the first and only time he did it, we were mesmerized. I remember thinking, 'What is he doing? Did he just crawl in the fridge?' It was as fun and weird for us to watch it too," Sher said.

It's amazing to learn that Phoenix really embraced Arthur Fleck's little quirks on the set. Although the action clearly shocked Sher, it was a good thing that the crew was prepared to film Phoenix in action no matter what he did. Needless to say, the movie's cinematography is one of the finest I've seen in a long time.

Joker is currently the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, defeating the two Deadpool movies. It is still screening in theaters worldwide.
