Joker Has Become Warner Brothers' Highest Grossing Film Of The Year

Todd Phillip's Joker movie might have only been in cinemas for ten days, but it looks like the gritty comic book movie's already become Warner Brothers' highest-grossing movie of the year.

Sure, the film might have been plagued with controversy for the past few months, however, the critically acclaimed DC movie's been nothing but a commercial success for Warner Brothers. The film had a pretty solid start, raking in $96.2 million at the domestic box office during its opening weekend. Not only did the movie become DC's biggest opening weekend since the release of Wonder Woman which earned $103.2 million during its opening back in June 2017, but the movie also beat out Venom, becoming the movie with the highest-grossing October opening.

Now, after taking in the largest October opening in Hollywood history, Joker's earned $55 million at the domestic box office, adding to the film's overall commercial success.

"Not only did Joker over-perform in North America, but also internationally where the acclaim, buzz, and controversy surrounding the film resonated strongly with moviegoers who put the film at the top of their cinematic priority list," Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian previously said in an interview with Variety. "Movies that become part of the general conversation due to their controversial nature are often those that transcend their status as a movie to become a cultural event and this is exactly what happened with Joker."

Joker's commercial success comes a bit of a surprise – there was so much controversy surrounding the movie before its release. There had been growing concern over the movie's potential to inspire viewers with similar demeanors and personalities as Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix). Victims of the Aurora Dark Knight Rises shooting wrote to Warner Brothers about their concern. The US military confirmed that there had been at least one credible threat of a mass shooting and the FBI declared that it was watching over Joker posts on social media, making sure that nothing would happen during the film's screenings.

Even the New York Police Department patrolled screenings of the film during its opening weekend to prevent any sort of tragedy from happening.

Still, it seems like Joker is winning, doing well at the box office and doing well with critics.

Joker is currently screening in cinemas.
