Joker Cinematographer Confirms the Fate of Zazie Beetz's Sophie

[THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR JOKER]

One of the biggest twists in Joker was the revelation that Arthur Fleck's relationship with Sophie (Zazie Beetz) wasn't real. Their last "real" interaction had Arthur walking away from the room like he did when he killed the psychiatrist in the end, so a lot of people expect that he killed Sophie and her daughter. Apparently, that's not the case.

Talking to /Film, cinematographer Lawrence Sher (a.k.a. the Larry from the Joaquin Phoenix freakout video), explained that Sophie is actually alive by the end of the film. Sher explains, "Some people have asked me, ‘Was she killed?' Todd makes it clear she wasn't killed. Arthur is killing people who've wronged him in a certain way, and Sophie never wronged him. In terms of what we did visually to play with the real and not real, there are callbacks and scenes that mirror each other. We leave hints using imagery or way we covered scenes similarly between scene. Outside of that, I like that people can have the conversation and come to their own conclusions."

Though the movie doesn't paint Joker as a hero, it also makes it clear that he's not completely despicable… yet. So far, the only innocent person we see him kill is the psychiatrist in the end, but for the rest of the movie, we have him only killing who he claims "get what they f*cking deserve."

Going back to Beetz though, did you know that she was in line to play Catwoman for the Batman movie opposite Robert Pattinson. She couldn't commit because of her appearance in Atlanta, but having her in Batman might further play on the ‘multiverse' aspect that DC is somewhat embracing.

Catch Beetz in Joker now in theaters.
