Joker: Folie à Deux could have a massive budget compared to the first film according to a new report.

The highly-anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning 2019 movie will continue Arthur Fleck's villainous adventure in Gotham City. This time around, he will be joined by Harley Quinn.

Joaquin Phoenix is set to reprise his Oscar-winning role while Lady Gaga joins the cast to play Harley Quin.

A recent report from Variety laid out the spending spree that Warner Bros. is doing for their upcoming projects and to attract A-list talents to work with the studio.

They revealed that Joker: Folie à Deux has a massive budget of $200 million, which is a huge bump from the first film's $60 million.

Part of the reason why the sequel has an expensive budget is due to the payday for its main stars as Phoenix is earning $20 million to reprise the role while Gaga is getting $12 million.

While the first film earned more than $1 billion, there are still some concerns about the sequel's box office performance since it has musical elements, which is perceived to be tricky for the general audience.

However, Gaga's involvement could attract a lot of people to the film since she has a huge fanbase worldwide and there might be curiosity about seeing her being paired with Phoenix.

There are no other reasons stated regarding why the sequel has an expensive production but it suggests that it will likely have a bigger scale and scope, unlike the first film's more grounded and intimate tone.

A $200 million budget is usually reserved for films that have significant VFX work and an A-list ensemble. Based on what we've known so far, that doesn't seem to be the case yet for Joker: Folie à Deux.

Perhaps we will learn more about the context of the film's massive budget once we see its first trailer soon.

Joker: Folie à Deux is set to release in theaters on October 4.
