John Boyega Reportedly In Talks to Join Daisy Ridley in Star Wars Film

The Star Wars Celebration this year brought exciting news to the fans. One of the promising announcements that were made was Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s untitled project that will bring Daisy Ridley back as Rey Skywalker.

Around 2022, Obaid-Chinoy was tapped by Lucasfilm to direct the film, with Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson co-writing. However, this year, both co-writers departed the project and handed the job to Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight.

Despite being announced first, Ridley will not be the lead in the film. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II was reportedly the lead actor attached to it, but after Lindelof left, the actor allegedly did the same.

During the latest episode of The Hot Mic podcast, co-host John Rocha claimed that Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy is currently having negotiations with John Boyega’s reps about the actor’s comeback to the franchise.

Even if he faced some controversies at the time, Boyega’s portrayal of Finn made quite a mark on the fans, who are still hoping he will return as the stormtrooper. Obaid-Chinoy’s feature set, 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, is the one they see as the perfect opportunity for that.

Boyega has been vocal about his feelings towards the franchise, especially with how disappointed he was with how Disney handled his character. Despite already saying that he made peace with the resentment, the actor previously said that he has no current intentions to return to Star Wars.

Even if this news is just rumors, most would have to agree that Finn’s arc is still to be explored in the Star Wars universe. After his appearance in the sequels, his part became significant given his situation of joining the resistance, hoping to find a new place that he belongs.

However, given that the upcoming movie is still in its early stages, any news about Boyega’s involvement is far away. According to Kennedy, the next iteration of the script will be finished by the end of May, and pre-production is set to begin in August.

According to Jeff Sneider, production and cameras ready to roll are still expected next February, as they are presumably targeting December 19, 2025, though this has yet to be confirmed by Lucasfilm.
