Jodie Whittaker Talks the Creation of Her Doctor Who Outfit

Ever since Doctor Who's return with Christopher Eccleston, we've seen the Doctor's main outfit to be a plain suit with a few specific elements here and there. With Jodie Whittaker's outfit, though, the Doctor looks a lot more eccentric with her coat and suspenders. As it turns out, this was a creative choice done by Wittaker herself along with costume designer Ray Holman.

Talking to Radio Times, Whittaker shared:

"I created my Doctor's costume with Ray Holman, the costume designer who worked on Broadchurch. I had an initial meeting with him and brought lots of images and bits and pieces that I'd seen. For example, I found an old black-and-white image on Google that spoke to me. It's of a woman walking with purpose in crop trousers, boots, braces and a T-shirt, and she just looks so comfortable and non-gender specific – that was my style point."

Besides the Doctor being a woman for the first time, it's also worth noting that they're making more changes not only on her look. The Doctor's new sonic screwdriver actually has a more organic feel to it and looks like something that came out of Man of Steel.

Though Peter Capaldi is still a more popular Doctor compared to Eccleston, he never really got as popular as the likes of David Tennant or Matt Smith. Now the franchise is looking to inject fresher blood with Whittaker's take, and based on the fan reaction, a lot of people are loving this more feminine take on the Doctor.

The next episode of Doctor Who airs on BBC One Oct. 14.
