Joaquin Phoenix Thinks Arthur Fleck Is The Real Joker

There is little doubt that audiences were a little confused about Arthur Fleck when they finished watching Joker. Was the character the real Joker that appears in the comic books or is he a completely different entity? Interestingly, Joaquin Phoenix has just confirmed that he thinks Arthur is the real thing.

Phoenix recently spoke to The Los Angeles Times about the film and he admitted that he had wondered about Arthur's identity. Nevertheless, he still believes that his character was the real Joker. "I mean, to me, yes, he is," Phoenix said. Nevertheless, he welcomes the ambiguity of it all and admitted that he and director Todd Phillips talked about embracing all possibilities.

"There was something that was great about the mystery of it," Phoenix confessed. "Todd and I talked a lot about how this is one of the few opportunities that you have where people don't expect to know the definitive truth of the character — and not only that, they probably don't want it. Usually, the demands of the movie are the opposite. I said, ‘We have to take advantage of that. Why would we not?'"

We'd certainly like to know for sure in a possible sequel. Unfortunately, Phoenix made it clear that he has no intention of working on a second Joker movie just because the first one made a lot of money.

How much money are we talking about? The film has just crossed the $900 million mark and is well on its way to scoring a huge $1 billion in the global box office. Not bad for a movie that doesn't specify whether the main character is the real Joker.

Joker is currently screening in theaters worldwide.
