JJ Abrams' Cancelled Superman Film Had Amazing Storyboards

There was a time when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J.J. Abrams wrote a script for a Superman film that somehow changed a lot of things about what truly happened to Krypton. Although Superman: Flyby was cancelled back in the 2000s, we finally have a glimpse at the storyboards for the movie, thanks to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse director Peter Ramsey.

Ramsey recently decided to share the amazing storyboards for Flyby on his official Twitter account. Check them out below.

Abrams wrote the script for Superman: Flyby in 2002. It featured a different origin story where Krypton is still intact, Jor-El is still alive, and some evil Kryptonians are after Kal-El. When Jor-El is imprisoned by his villainous brother Kata-Zor, Kal-El is sent to Earth in hopes he will survive and fulfill a Kryptonian prophecy. Interestingly, the script concludes with Superman still in Krypton and hinting at a possible sequel.

The project was initially supposed to be directed by Brett Ratner but he was replaced by McG. At one point, the latter even had the current Man of Steel Henry Cavill to shoot test footage. Unfortunately, Warner Bros. ultimately replaced McG with Brian Singer, who decided to create his own thing. This, of course, led to Superman Returns with Brandon Routh playing Kal-El.

In all honesty, the Flyby script was wild and crazy and it probably wouldn't make a great movie. Nevertheless, the storyboards from Ramsey are indeed amazing and an awesome look at what might have been back in the 2000s.
