Jennifer Lawrence Clarifies 'Hunger Games Began Female Action Leads Era' Comment: “That’s Not What I Meant To Say At All”

There is no use denying that Katniss Everdeen from District 12 in The Hunger Games remains to be one of the most prominent female action lead figures we have known today. However, Jennifer Lawrence received quite a backlash at her claim that Katniss led the Female Action Leads era.

Speaking with Viola Davis for Variety’s actor-on-actor talk, Lawrence remarks, “Nobody had ever put a woman in the lead of an action movie before The Hunger Games.” Though the actress was also complimenting Viola’s 2022 The Woman King, fans were quick to address that Katniss was in fact, NOT the first female action lead in the era.

While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence clarifies that she did not mean to be biased about Katniss leading the era of female action leads. The actress reiterates how it feels good to be a part of the era of female action leads. Check out Jennifer Lawrence’s full quote below:

“That’s certainly not what I meant to say at all. I know that I am not the only woman who has ever led an action film. What I meant to say was how good it feels [to be a woman leading an action film].”

In an attempt to backtrack what she had said, she emphasizes that it’s more about breaking the old myths that only male action leads can be relatable to both genders of all ages, all the while brushing off the fact that she could ever claim she was the first to lead an action film in history.

“And I meant that with Viola [Davis] — to blow past these old myths that you hear about… about the chatter that you would hear around that kind of thing. But it was my blunder and it came out wrong. I had nerves talking to a living legend.”

Meanwhile, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is currently slated for release on November 17, 2023.
