Jeffrey Wright Wants To See More Villains For The Batman Franchise

The Batman star Jeffrey Wright who will play as the next Commissioner James Gordon thinks that the new Batman franchise should introduce new villains.

The Batman's plot revolves around Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne, following his second year as the Bat Vigilante and solving crimes for Gotham City. Matt Reeves directed the highly-anticipated reboot of the Batman franchise and it could be a fresh start in opening the Batverse for the DC fans. The Batman's main villain will be The Riddler who will be played by Prisoners actor, Paul Dano.

While The Riddler is first in line to antagonize Batman in the film, Reeves won't waste time in bringing more potential villains like The Penguin who will be played by Colin Farell. The Penguin spinoff is already confirmed by HBO Max and we will see the iconic villain again after 30 years since Danny DeVito's portrayal from 1992's Batman Returns.

We e all have our own favorite Batman villains but Jeffrey Wright also has some personal ideas on what the new Batman reboot should introduce. Talking to Screenrant, Wright explained how he would like The Batman to invent their own set of new antagonists. Wright says:

"Who would I love to see? You know, in the TV series they had the rogues gallery that we know, but they also created some of their own villains. I think King Tut was newly created and I don't see any reason why we should stop now. It's great to revisit the familiar, but I think it's also an exciting opportunity, because the franchise continues to grow, continues to evolve, to actually come up with some new."

Though fans of DCEU already anticipate a new iteration of Paul Dano's The Riddler, which was a smart choice because the character has not resurfaced again after 1995's Batman Forever. The Riddler in The Batman as seen from the trailers looks more terrifying and grounded stepping away from its Comics portrayal.

The Batman universe has a lot of villains from the Comics that could be developed into the new franchise. Director Matt Reeves recently confirmed that a sequel will happen and it is up to him what characters he will craft next.

The Batman will hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
